Coherent manipulation of multi-particle quantum systems lies at the heart of scalable quantum computation and long-distance quantum communication.Under continuous supports from the National Natural Science Foundation of China,Pan Jianwei's group at the University of Science and Technology of China has made significant progress toward this goal.In 2012,Pan's group developed an ultra-bright and high-fidelity source of entangled photons,and created the world's first eight-photon entanglement[Nature Photonics2012,6:225],the largest photonic Schroedinger cat state to date.Based on the technique of eight-photon manipulation,they have also demonstrated the working principle of topological error correction[Nature2012,482:489],a key process that can dramatically reduce the tolerable error rate of qubits.The team has further developed techniques including high-precision time synchronization and fast optical tracking.Remarkably,the group has successfully teleported the quantum state of single photons over 100 km in free space[Nature 2012,488:185],a new record in quantum teleportation.In addition,they have realized bi-
