汉宋之争,是清代学坛的一椿要案,桐城派与之有着不解之缘。乾隆年间,姚鼐与戴震公开对抗,嘉道年间,方东树与江藩再起波澜,桐城派始终是汉宋之争中宋学派的主要阵营。这既是门户之见使然,更是桐城派尊崇程朱而重治"术"与汉学家尊奉汉学而重治"学"的学术分歧导致的必然结果。嘉道时期的桐城派主张汉宋兼采,表现出开明的学术态度。但是,用汉学之"学"补宋学之"术",汉学为宋学服务,才是他们的最终意图。
