Increasing evidence suggests that the inflammatory process is closely associated with essential hypertension. Inflammatory markers have been found to be associated with increased risk of hypertension and could be useful tools in the diagnosis of hypertension in the future. Data reviewed here provide evidence that identification of clinically useful indices and development of novel therapeutic approaches to interfering with inflammation and oxidative stress may ameliorate cardiovascular outcomes in hyperten- sion.
