In terms of imagery, tropes, and syntax, the 17th-century English poetry demonstrates a striking stylistic difference from that of the 16th century, the cause of which lies in the baroque culture prevailing in Europe from the late 16th to the 17th century. The baroque culture precipitates the moving away of English poetry from the objective imitation into a subjective expression, meanwhile the baroque anxiety and visual magnificence prescribe the making of the stylistic tension and exaggeration in the 17th-century English poetry. The stylistic formation is not merely a matter of poetry itself, but also involves cultural aspects of a particular period.
