On Harold Pinter's Space Philosophy

Space is an important symbol in Harold Pinter＇ s plays, and mainly embodied in a variety of fea- tured rooms. From the perspective of space philosophy, this article examines the space matters in Pinter＇ s two works, The Room and The Caretaker, points the playwright＇ s strong consciousness of complex interplay between human and space, namely, space has lost it＇ s fundamental function as human＇ s harbor of refuge. Torture, distrust, betrayal and fear have replaced warmth and protection. In a contemporary context of the ever fierce space-depriva- tion, his works evoke a more careful observation and profound meditation on modern people＇ s existential dilemma.
