林语堂译介过西方流浪汉小说,并对西方流浪汉小说在表现内容和艺术手法上有所借鉴,同时融入了鲜明的民族色彩和现代意识。他竭力赞颂流浪中的自由意志和批判立场,在一些以移民为题材带有自传色彩的小说中拓展了乡愁主题,塑造了性灵而悠闲的中国式"放浪者"流浪汉形象。

Lin Yutang not only translated a western picaresque novel,but also drew on western picaresque novels in terms of theme stuff and artistic methods.At the same time he injected distinct national features and modern thinking into his own literary creation.He extolled the free will and critical stance of vagabondage to the hilt;He developed the theme of nostalgia in some of his autobiographical works featuring migrants and created the image of Chinese-style intelligent and leisured vagabonds.
