It is not enough for a good novel to give readers just the pleasure of reading, for the artistic value of a novel lies in its ability to arouse readers＇ consideration and introspection and to inquire into humanity, as is evi- dent in novels by Sha Shi. As a late-mature writer who started his novel-writing at the age of ten, Sha Shi has pub-lished successively a collection of short stories--The Glass House and a novel-Love Acts-in about a decade. Free from the traditional motif of exile found in novels on new migrants, these novels probe directly into the relationship between males and females, between the rich and the poor, refreshing because of the weird, mysterious and absurd tint between elegance and vulgarism in humanity, which is on the part of Sha Shi＇s novels.
