美国人最初获知有关台湾的信息,多来自欧洲之出版物,随之则为大量来华美国侨民之著述。西方来华传教士作为一个极为重要而又颇为特殊的群体,在华居住时间相对稳定,文化素养整体较高,谙熟中国语言文化。他们通过创办报刊、出版著作、举办演讲、邮寄书信等方式,大量向美国传递有关台湾的信息,对台湾形象在美国的早期传播与建构,厥功甚伟。以来华传教士为主体的西方人对台湾形象在美国的早期传播,具有一定的主观性,其目的则是希冀美国政府在政治、经济、文化上重视台湾。

The Information about Taiwan which the Americans learned first mostly came from European publications,and then from a large number of writings by the American nationals living in China.As a very important and special group,Western missionaries living in China were relatively stable,well educated as a whole,were familiar with China's languages and cultures.They passed on the information about Taiwan to the United States in large quantities by founding periodicals,publications,making speeches and mailing letters and so on.They made a significant contribution to the communication and construction of Taiwan's image in America early.Without doubt,the spread of Taiwan's image in America early by the Westerners who mainly formed by missionaries in China have certain subjectivity and the purpose of their spread is to hope for that the United States government pays attention to Taiwan in politics,economy and culture.
