Mao Dun is representative of the writers in the period of the Republic of China. His narrations on capital reveal that in a chaotic market, capital is basically on variation and shrinkage. The manipulation from the non-market forces in the operation of capital leads to the latter's "being vaporized", "losing weight" or "being transferred", resulting in the shrinkage of the total capital in society. Through this type of narration, a personalized capital market is presented to the reader; it demonstrates that when feudal culture is still rampant and market economy has not yet been shaped, a healthy and regulated capital market is almost impossible; it also reveals the author's ideology about the rationality of capital existence and exploitation, which might fall in the logic of social development or might not.
