Fundamentally, Ferdinand de Saussure is a philosophical linguist rather than a linguist in the common sense. He sets up "abstraction" and "systematization" as the main methods to establish a "scientific" linguistics. His theories and contributions to linguistic history and "modem" linguistics can only be understood from this perspective.

  • 7In its own nature it is itself an apprehension of particular linguistic elements in mental unity-such elements to be regarded as matter in contrasts to this form. For a form of this kind resides in every lan- guage, and by means of this comprehensive unity a nation makes the language bequeathed by its forebears into its own. (Humboldt 1836/1988:52).
