Objective To evaluate the safety of cerebral catheter angiography in patients with congenital vascular variation. Methods Two hundred and ninety-seven patients with simple cerebral angiography procedures were divided into the control group (288 cases) and the vascular variation group (9 cases), depending on whether or not there was congenital vascular variation in them. Then, incidence and causes of vascular angiographic complication in the 2 groups were compared and analyzed. Results Rates of com plication in the vascular variation group and the control group were 33.3% and 2.1% respectively, indicating that there was statistical difference between them (P 〈 0.01 ). Malmanipulation was the main reason for the incidence of complication in the control group, while the chief cause of complication in the vascular variation group was due to vascular variation. Conclusion The risk of complications for patients with congenital vascular variation was obviously greater, for this reason, non-invasive angiography such as MRA or CTA should be the first choice for these patients.
