Virginia Woolf is a splendid English writer of modernism and a feminist pioneer in English literary history, which had al- ways dominated by male writers. In To the Lighthouse Mrs. Ramsay as "the angel in the house" bears hardship and swallows insults without complaint; while Lily as "the rebel" pursues self-independence and behaves at her personal will. The transition from the tra- ditional woman Mrs. Ramsay to the new woman Lily is the historical process in which women struggle to relocate their positions and improve their self-identity in the patriarchal society. Woolfs Androgyny is perfectly interpreted in this process. The tWO seemingly contradictory female characters are actually born in the same root as the consubstantial symbiosis.
