Direct Record and Indirect Record

直书与曲笔是对立统一的关系;中国历代史家强调秉笔直书的重要性,但是由于"春秋笔法"、史学从属于政治的命运、史学家的个人问题、文字记述的主观性等原因,史料中曲笔现象处处可见,但是,曲笔也能反映一定的历史真相;直书与曲笔是中国传统史学观念的"一体两翼"。

Direct record and indirect record are complementary to each other. The ancient Chinese historians emphasized the importance of direct record. Yet because of the ＂Chun Qiu Bi Fa＂, politics, the personal problems of the historian and the subjectivity in text description, indirect record is rather common in historical documents. Yet indirect record can also reveal truths to some degree. Actually, direct record and indirect record are complementary to each other in the art of Chinese traditional historiography.
