亨利·詹姆斯是一百年前那场声势浩大的现代主义文学运动的伟大先驱者,也是英美文坛早期现代主义思想的重要倡导者。詹姆斯的现代主义思想不仅为英美文学从恪守传统转向全面革新奠定了重要基础,而且对第一次世界大战前后崛起的整个一代"先锋派"作家具有不容置疑的引领作用。本文旨在深入探讨詹姆斯早期现代主义思想的内涵与特征,系统阐述其创作观念和小说理论的开拓性,并揭示他在追求艺术革新过程中暴露出的历史局限性。

Henry James, the great pioneer of the significant mod- ernist movement which took place a century ago, was an outstanding spokesman of early modernism. His modernist concep- tion not only laid an important foundation for the transformation of British and American literature from the conventional course to the new direction, but also paved the way for the rise of the new generation of avant-garde writers. This paper is intended to explore the essence and characteristics of James＇ early modernist conception, discuss the pioneering spirit of his literary ideas and theories, and at the same time reveal his limitations in the pursuit of his artistic goal.
