The authors of Allies of the State are two well-known political scientists who have written extensively on the issues of democratization and the rise of the middle and entrepreneurial classes in China. Bruce Dickson is a professor at the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University and Jie Chen is currently serving as the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies at the University of Idaho but also holds professorships bestowed by Jiaotong University in Shanghai and by the Ministry of Education in China.
