Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has achieved ideal effect on the treatment of peripheral nerve injury, but there was little research in the repair of spinal cord injury (SCI).Acute spinal cord injury rat model was established by Allen' s method. The appropriate parameters of low-level laser therapy was screened by measuring the penetrating power and tissues temperature change. Then low-level laser was applied directly to the lesion site after spinal cord injury for 14 days consecutively according to the result of screening.Subsequently, the hindlimb motor function BBB scales were performed on 1,3,7,14 and 21 day.Hematoxylin-Eosin staining was used to observe spinal cord pathological changes and evaluate the syringomyelia area in both groups. The results showed that, after 21 days of spinal cord injury, the BBB score of laser irradiated group was significantly higher than the control group (P < 0.05) and syringomyelia area in laser irradiated group was also obviously smaller than the control group on 7,14 and 21 day (P <0.05).It turned out that 810 nm,spot area ofO.2 cm2,500 mW/cm2 and 510 J/cm2 low-level laser irradiation can promote motor function recovery safely and effectively after spinal cord injury.
