The novel Jikan, published in 1953 by Yoshie Hotta who is a representative of Japanese postwar writer, is the first and probably the only full-length direct description of the Nanjing Massacre in Japanese literature. This paper attempts to use this text to explore how Japanese intellectuals of the war generation understand the modern Japanese War of Aggression against China with the Nanjing Massacre as a typical scene and the overall China-Japan relations. Originally Yoshie Hotta had no relations with China. The nearly two-year experience in Shanghai after the war, however, led him to painful but profound thoughts on China-Japan relations. Jikan was precisely a magnum opus of these thoughts, which highly condensed the heavy reflections of this generation's intellectuals of conscience on the past war, the China-Japan relations and the destiny of East Asia.
