Pilate Dead, a mysterious woman in the novel Song of Solomon, is a tragic character. She intends to protect the history of the family, but she has no knowledge of it. Though she takes pride in her independence, she indulges her children and fails miserably as a mother. She is a woman capable of love and willing to help others, but she is rejected from the black community. As a matter of fact, she has been unfortunately marginalized by society.
