Objective To investigate the efficacy and security of high intensity ultrasound (HIU) in the treatment of early stage rabbit VX 2 cancer implanted in the liver. Methods Twenty eight rabbits with liver tumors were randomly divided into three groups five days after implantation: group A ( n =8) did not receive therapy; group B ( n =12) received HIU sonication; group C ( n =8) received operation therapy. In the group B, at random, 4 of 12 was sacrificed on the 3rd day after ultrasound exposure to assess pathological changes of targeted tissue under light microscopy. During the HIU therapy, the temperature changes of targeted tissue were recorded. The survival time of each rabbit was recorded. Liver and renal functions were examined at predetermined times. Results Targeted tissue showed an irreversible death following treatment and the hepatic parenchyma outside the targeted tissue was normal. During HIU therapy, the temperature of the targeted tissue rose to 85℃, but the tissue's temperature 0.5 mm outside the target only raised 2℃. The survival time of rabbits in each group was 54d in group A, 150 d in group B, 150 d in group C, and their cure rate was 0(0/8), 75.0(6/8), 62.5 (5/8) respectively. Compared with group A, the survival in the group B and group C was significantly longer( P < 0.05 ). However, there were no significant differences in survival time or tumor cured rate between group B and group C. Conclusion HIU can effectively and safely treat rabbit VX 2 cancer implanted in liver.
