In the past few decades, Asia has witnessed an astonishing proliferation of high-rise buildings. Tall towers are not only growing in numbers but also in height. This phenomenon presents enormous opportunities but also great challenges. It is increasingly accepted that architects and urban planners cannot work in isolation from each other(or even perceive each other as rivals, as has been the case in the past), but must work together and take a holistic approach. Buildings do not exist in isolation from their environment, but influence- and are influenced by- their surrounding area. This is particularly true of tall buildings due to their intensive use of space. Not only do they have an imposing physical presence which can change the character of an area for better or for worse, but the increased density of residential or working population which is a consequence of vertical development can have a profound influence on the urban dynamics of the surrounding area. For example, they can put more pressure on transport and resource infrastructure, again presenting both opportunities and challenges. Simultaneously, the increased commercial or business activity which can take place in high-rise developments can give a huge economic boost to an area. Tall buildings thus have an enormously powerful role in shaping the development of modern cities, and it is therefore crucial to understand how to ensure that their influence is positive rather than negative.
