“Xue Shu”: An Etymological Analysis

"学"与"术"是分别独立出现,各具不同的语义;然后由分而合,并称为"学"之名;至近代才有今天所谓"学术"的意义。

In ancient Chinese, ＂xue＂ （lit. ： learning） and ＂shu＂ （lit. ： craft） are independent terms at the beginning, each of which has its own meanings. Later, with the development of the language, the two characters collocate with each other to form a new word, but it is not until modern times that the word has ac- quired what it means today.
