Implications of Confucius Institute to Public Diplomacy

公共外交作为近年来我国外交工作新的增长点和着力点,越来越受到人们的关注和重视。其概念引自国外,但在翻译过程中却被很多人误读。实际上,"公共外交"并不是一个新创概念,而是"人民外交"在新时代的延伸和发展。孔子学院近年来的快速成长,搭建了公共外交的新平台。实践告诉我们,与其争论"公共外交"的概念,不如找准定位,创新模式,锻炼队伍,提升能力,为中国特色的公共外交闯出一条活力奔放的发展之路。

As a new growth point and focus of China＇ s diplomatic work in recent years, public diplomacy is drawing more and more attention. Quoted from abroad, the concept of ＂public diplomacy＂ is misunderstood by many people during the process of translation. As a matter of fact, ＂public diplomacy＂ is but a contempo- rary version of the traditional ＂people to people diplomacy＂ rather than a new term. Thanks to its rapid devel- opment in recent years, the Confucius Institute has successfully built a new platform for public diplomacy. This shows that it is less helpful to be entangled in the dispute over the concept of ＂public diplomacy＂ than to blaze a trail in practicing the public diplomacy with Chinese characteristics by defining the orientation, innova- ting the model, training the personnel and improving the competence.
