Explicitness of Logical Connection in EST Translation from the Perspective of Logical Metaphor

基于名词化经验隐喻,在小句复合体到小句的级阶重新定位(relocation in rank)机制的作用下,科学语言通过逻辑隐喻"打包"信息密集型逻辑推理,即小句复合体序列中过程与过程之间通过连词实现的逻辑关系由小句及物结构中成分与成分之间通过动词等其它词类隐含的逻辑关系重新建构。修辞结构理论依靠多种修辞关系描述逻辑连接词和非逻辑连接词相连的、不同等级、不同词汇句法手段实现的结构段。其分析工具RST Tool的定性分析直观地展现了科技汉语译文通过增加连接词、实施向上级转移运动和重组句子结构实现的隐喻式向一致式转换的显性逻辑连接。该研究从跨语言转换的角度有力地证明了逻辑隐喻这一概念的合理性,为探讨跨语言逻辑隐喻提供了可操作性分析平台。

Based on experiential metaphor of nominalization, and under the mechanism of relocation in rank from clause com- plex to clause, it is argued in grammatical metaphor.theory that the language of science characteristically ＂packs＂ information- ally dense logical reasoning chains by logical metaphor, meaning the logical relations between processes construed by conjunctions in the sequence of clause complex as if they were relations between elements implicitly reconstrued by other word classes such as verbs within the transitivity structure of clause. Rhetorical Structure Theory formulates a number of rhetorical relations to describe spans across different textual hierarchies, which are realized by a variety of lexical grammatical devices and con- nected either by conjunctions or otherwise. The qualitative analysis performed by RST Tool visually demonstrated the explicit- ness of logical connection in translated scientific texts in the transference from metaphorical form in the original text to congru- ent form in the source text by means of adding conjunctions, making upward shift in rank and re-configuring grammatical structure. This study is significant in the sense that it provides powerful evidence for the justification of the notion of logical metaphor from a cross-linguistic perspective, and that RST Tool is proved to provide an operational platform for exploring cross-linguistic logical metaphor.
