Tradition and Identity: the Concept of Geomancy in the Tang Dynasty and Burial in Luoyang Recorded in Epitaphs

唐人对墓葬风水的追求是普遍现象。祖先崇拜、洛阳地域的良好风水是吸引唐人归葬洛阳的重要因素。风水作为中国传统文化的重要组成部分,是了解唐人思想观念的有效途径。当时移居内地的非汉人群体,对华夏文化中风水观念的摄取,既表明其汉化的趋向,亦是其认同华夏文化的表征。

As an important part of Chinese traditional culture, geomancy is connected with the ancient funeral concept and presents an effective way to understand the ideological concept of the Tang people . Based on unearthed epitaphs, it was a common phenomenon in the Tang Dynasty that people, no matter Han or minority people, paid much attention to geomancy. The ancestor worship in traditional culture and the favorite geomancy in Luoyang turned out to be the two important factors attracting Tang people to burying in Luoyang. The Non-Han people migrating into the inland came to adopt geomancy, which represents the tendency of Han nationalization and also reflects their identification with Chinese culture.
