米兰·昆德拉认为小说在探询存在问题过程中,人的自我一直贯穿始终。在昆德拉的小说中,人对自我的把握、追求并不自由,自由选择只是个"浪漫的谎言",因而总是失败。但只有在失败中人们才会获得"顿悟",达到真善美圆融交汇的境界。

Milan Kundera thinks that the self of people exists all the time when a novel inquiring the issue of Being. In Milan Kundera＇ s novels, people＇ s control and pursuing of self is not free. Free choice is only a ＂romantic lie＂ and therefor always ends in failure. But only in failure can people eventually acquire the ＂den enlightenment＂ and reach the horizon of a harmonious integration of the truth, the good and the beautiful.
