Both theme-rheme system and cohesion theory are an important part of Halliday＇ s Systemic Functional Linguistics. They pro- vide a theoretical framework for discourse analysis and can be applied to analyze any discourse either spoken discourse or written dis- course. This paper mainly analyzes English disaster news in application of theme progression pattern to indicate the important role that theme progression pattern plays in discourse analysis. Apart from,theme progression pattern is also an important method to realize dis- course cohesion.
