Chouchan Mage and Shaolin Martial Arts

少林武术历史悠久,源远流长。其起源明清以来一个流行最广的说法是中国禅宗的始祖印度僧人菩提达摩或少林寺的创建者印度僧人跋陀。大量的历史资料显示,达摩、跋陀只是佛学高僧,并非武术高手;而佛学大师、少林寺第二代掌门人、著名的武术高手稠禅法师才是少林寺最早岀现的武僧和少林禅武合一第一人。稠禅在进入少林寺之前,一直生活在河南北部和河北中南部的寺院,在那里禅武双修,练就了一身功夫;主持少林寺后,他倡导禅武结合,从而对少林武术特色的形成产生了深远的影响。少林武术的渊源与佛学是不同的,少林武术不是"舶来品",而是在中华民族传统文化的总体氛围中孕育产生的,是中华武术在宗教界的传播和发展。

The martial arts of Shaolin Temple has a long history and goes back to ancient times; with regard to its origin, one of the wide talks is that the first ancestor was Putidamo, an India monk ; A large number of historic data shows that Dharma and Lenvoituo were only two Buddhist monks but not martial masters; while Mage Chouchan, the second generation head of Shaolin temple was the first military monk and the one who combined Bh- ddhism - martial into one. Before entering Shaolin temple, Chouchan had lived in the temples situated in north part of Henan province and middle - south part of Hebei province, where he pratised both Buddhism and martial arts and got the skill. After getting into the master of Shaolin temple, he advocated Buddhism - martial combining into one, so that had a deep influence on the form the feature of Shaolin martial arts. The oringins of Shaolin martial arts and Buddhist learning are different; Shaolin martial arts are not ＇foreign products＇ , but produced in the overall at- mosphere of Chinese nation traditional culture , spread and develop in the religious circles.
