The explosion of Sinopec’s oil pipeline in Huangdao on November 22 that led to 62 dead,at least 136 wounded and enormous property damage was one of the biggest accidents for the company since the 1989 explosion of an oil tank in this same area.This incident has caused local government’s position towards this stateowned company to become very complicated,while local residents have become filled with fear and even hate for the company.A district of Qingdao City,the past 30 years of development have been very good for Huangdao.However,now many residents have begun to wonder if the development of Huangdao’s chemical industry and urbanization has been worth the huge loss of life and prosperity.
