Current views on Zhang Shenfu's philosophy are limited and need to be redefined. Zhang's philosophy can be viewed as a part of modern Chinese Neo-realism and materialism, while it mainly results from Russell's na?ve realism. The use of 'analytical methods' and materialism veils his realistic standpoint. By examining 'reality'—the fundamental belief in Zhang's philosophy—and its origin and referent, the problem of why Zhang's philosophy can be summarized as 'realistic world view' can be solved.
