The underlying ideas and beliefs that the members of a community share are usually omitted by the participants within a community. Cultural default is the absence of the underlying cultural knowledge. Translators bridge the gap between the writer and the intended readers and help the latter understand what is transparent to source language readers but opaque to the target language readers. This paper discusses several translation methods employed in the English version of Fortress Besieged by Jeanne Kelly and Nathan K Mao and how they are used to compensate for the cultural default.
