Zhong Xing's Review of Zuo Commentary

钟惺好史,他运用历史、文学的双重角度对《左传》进行了较为全面的品评。通过品评,钟惺强调了传统的儒家经世致用之说,提倡了治史之风,总结了作文之法,这对于扭转晚明浮躁学风是有一定的积极意义的。但是,钟惺的史评过于随意,且深度不够,其作用也是有限的。

Keen on history, Zhong Xing made a comprehensive review of Zuo Commentary in terms of history and literature. Through his review, Zhong Xing emphasized the traditional humanistic pragmatism of Confucianism, advocated a new approach to history and summarized the writing methods, thus having played a significant role in remedying the flippant style of study in the late Ming Dynasty. However, Zhong Xing＇ s review of history is of limit- ed functions due to its excessive randomness and insufficient insight.
