The Man Who Planted Trees, published by the French writer Jean Giono in 1954,has since been enjoying lasting popularity among readers and is now generally regarded as an excellent piece. It tells the story of a widower who plants trees on the desolate highlands near the Alps and finally succeeds in transforming the barren region into an earthly paradise.Taking its narrative features and speech presentation into consideration, this essay endeavors to disclose how the author has achieved such a huge success by first-person homodiegetic narration, while praising the old man's selfless action and noble mind by rendering his voice seemingly invisible through adept manipulation of speech presentation.
