Evaluation on the Discussion of English Progressive Aspect Based on Michaelis' Aspectual Coercion Theory

认知语言学家Michaelis认为,作为一种构式,进行体本身具有其自有的意义,当它和不同类型的情状动词搭配时,由于进行体对动词产生压制作用,使原本不用于进行体的动词类型发生类型转移。本文在对Michaelis对进行体分析的基础上认为,不同的动词类型用于进行体,除了体压制的作用外,还需考虑主观性等其他因素,此外,要充分探讨不同类型动词和进行体的搭配,还有必要对各种情景类型语义特征做更详尽的分析。

The article reviews a paper by Michaelis, which analyzes the English progressive aspect from the angle of aspectual coercion. Michaelis holds that the English progressive aspect is a construction itself and further analyzes the interaction between the construction and the four different verb aspects. We hold that the perspective of Michaelis is very inspiring, but there still remain some problems in its analysis on the interaction between the construction and verb aspects, for example, the aspect of subjectivity should also be taken into consideration. Besides, to fully grasp the interaction between the construction and verb types, it is necessary to have a more detailed analysis on different verb types.
