On the Functions of Universities and Colleges in Modern Public Sphere

大学在构建和维持现代公共领域的过程中起着核心作用,这种作用主要表现在为公共领域培养合格的参与者、提供坚实的知识基础与保障、直接参与公共商谈、开辟更广阔的公共对话空间、以及不断创造更多的公共利益等方面。要促进我国公共领域的建设与发展,还需转变高等教育的育人模式,提升大学的知识建设与服务能力和参与公共商谈的积极性,并不断拓展以各种学术性活动为载体的公共空间。

Universities and colleges play an essential role in constructing and maintaining the modern public sphere. Their functions include cultivating qualified participants for the public sphere, providing a solid foundation of knowledge, participating in public discourse directly, expanding the space for pub- lic discussion, and increasing the production of public goods. To build and develop the public sphere in China requires us to transform the cultivation mode of higher education, enhance universities＇ abilities of knowledge creation and service, stimulate their initiatives in public discourse participation, and continu- ously enlarge the public space on the basis of various academic activities.
