Complement system is known as highly sophisticated immune defense mechanism and effector ann in host defense against serial infectious agents, such as cellular debris, apoptotic cells and foreign intruders. For recent decades, the traditional perception of complement in immunity has been drastically challenged by accumulating evidence for novel and unexpected functions. Generally, complement is now known to be involved in metabolism, reproduction, osteogenesis, tissue regeneration and stem cell biology, etc. In this review, recent discoveries are referred to discuss the previously under-appreciated role of complement in liver regeneration induced by various pathogens. The unintegrated effect of complement on regeneration priming and pro-inflammation modulates the balance between liver regeneration and injury, which determines the pathological process.
