《时务报》是维新运动中最重要的刊物,它引起的社会反响非常激烈。在它的读者中,既有对其主张极表赞同的,也有强烈反对甚至嫉视的。应该看到,无论何种反馈都绝不是单向度的,在赞同的声音中同时伴随着一些担忧和不安,在反对的声音中也不乏爱国的热忱,甚至在"嫉视"的反应中也有一些对于中国儒学的深刻思考。当时各界人士往来的信函,真实而鲜活地记录下这些交织的声音。这些书信具体地彰显出《时务报》所引发的社会效应,折射出各阶层的政治利益与文化理念。

The Chinese Progress is the most important joumal in the Wuxu Reform. It originates great and complex resonances of the official class, the traditional gentry and intellectual class. There is no pure approval or opposing. The approval is mixed up with anxiety and worry, on the other hand, the opposing contains patriotism, even in the hostile, and there are deep reflections of traditional culture. The personal and business letters is a true and living document of those resonances.
