Although he knew Chiang Ching-kuo for 23 years,Yi Fu-en never thought of himself as one of 'Chiang's troops' as many described him.Instead he had always maintained a professional distance from his superior.As a personal aide always close to top,Yi Fu-En was able to witness the setting sun of a family dynasty.During his time in the military his comrades in arms always envied his position as Captain of Chiang Kaishek's private plane.In his memoirs he wrote: 'In 1945,after the successful defeat of the Japanese,I flew the magnificent and valiant Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek himself back to the capital;just three years later,it was a bitter and dejected President Chiang who sat in my plane;and in 1949,my plane carried the bleak-faced President Chiang to Taiwan.'
