The positions of lead-acid batteries (LAB) among all electrochemical power sources (EPS) as well as of the new requirements of the battery market to this type of batteries were overviewed. Valve-regulated lead-acid batteries were the least maintenance batteries, so the problems that had been solved or were still in the process of solving so as to make VRLA batteries meet the basic performance requirements to EPS during the new decade were investigated. General considerations related to lead-acid batteries were followed by detailed descriptions of the processes that were of major importance for the performance of VRLAB. The influence of additional (parasitic) reactions as well as on the efficiency of the closed oxygen cycle and the thermal problems related to its malfunction was discussed in details. Technical solutions to these problems were proposed. Finally, some new LAB designs were discussed, which would occupy important positions on the battery market during the next decade.
