Early modern novels configuring modernity are established on the basis of the motif of ethical self-confession between double-domed male hero and another male intellectual. The literary ethical device of self-confession is created by male intellectuals and emerged through the interaction between the male characters. Modern Japanese literature has thus created the standard method of the modern novel as it expresses the modern individual's ethical sense of guilt or ethical inner conflicts through confession. In this respect, it is not unconvincing to say that the new modern state as well as the individual has builtthe ethical order which form the background of the birth of modern Japanese literature. This paper will not only examine the literary ethics implicit in the device of confession, but also provide an alternative approach to the history of modern Japanese literature by adopting Nie Zhenzhao's method of "ethical literary criticism."
