The sociological concept of modernity is inexorably associated with modernization (i.e. urbanization, industrialization etc.),while its psychological concept is closely related to the experiences, identity and consciousness of human beings. The advancement of science and technology with the expansion of human desires precipitates cosmopolitanism, the feature of which is transcending borders and limitations. In The Blithedale Romance, by means of the spectatorial perspective of Coverdale, Hawthorne's reflection on modernity shows his attention to environmental problems, to the interests and living conditions of the public, to the alienation and evilness of human beings; his investigation into people's consciousness and the change of identity in the context of superficial and immediate social interaction; his doubt towards cosmopolitan transcendence and freedom, and his care for women's state of being.
