《玄怪录》专以涉猎奇闻怪谈为务,却又深刻地反映出作者对现实的思考。其主题倾向可分为以下几类:作意好奇的传奇体叙事笔法,与文人展现史才、诗笔、议论的时代风气有关;入冥情节与三生轮回使世俗人的欲望满足和身心解脱通过虚幻世界获得实现,这也体现出作者对现实人生悲剧的理性思索;基于现实人生无法摆脱的痛苦,飞升仙境的主题展现了士人寻求解脱的方式,也婉转曲折地寄托了对文化理想的坚守与追求,是士人维系精神生命、延续文化传统的曲折呈现。

Xuanguailu, a collection of fantastic stories, profoundly reflects the writer＇s serious cogitation aboutreality. The concentrated themes can be divided into several categories as follows ： First, curiosity which is a usual narrating way of fictions in Tang Dynasty is re- lated to the phenomenon that intellectuals show their talents about literary and history. Second, wondering in hell and samsara among the past, present and future life make the unfulfilled desire and relief come true in an illusory world, which also indicate the author＇s ra- tional thinking about the tragic existence of human life. Third, due to the inevitable suffering in reality, the theme of flying up to the paradise and being immortal shows a special relief way, which also demonstrates the intellectuals insistence to the cultural ideal and tactfully reveals a tradition of humanity.
