Consideration of the travel journals of numerous tourists suggest that many were motivated, not by the novel, the exotic, or the strange, but by the time honored, the familiar, and the expected. Under the circumstances, framing the expe- rience of the visit through the anticipation of arrival-a kind of pre-emptive nostalgia where the site is prescriptively interpre- ted through the accounts of others-became a necessary, and inevitable, prerequisite to the visit itself. As case in point is Sojourns, the travel journal of Martin Heidegger, in which the philosopher recounts his first visit to Greece, in the spring of 1962 when, in the company of his wife Elfride, he toured the Greek islands and visited Athens. His observations, even when mediated through the complexities of a difficult philosophical discourse, suggest that this visit was more of a home- coming than an excursion, and that, as much as he was physically traveling to Greece, Greece was emotionally and intellec- tually coming to him.
