This paper employs six overlapping forms of analysis to explore the nature and role of urban design,drawing on current practices and the history of the subject.Urban design is analysed as an intervention in a context,as part of making and transforming the built environment,and so the paper investigates the nature of this action and the dimensions of the context in which it takes place. Urban design produces guidelines and instructions for the transformation of urban space,in a process which has social,technical,and aesthetic dimensions.The role of urban design often revolves around making connections between different fragments in space,aiming at creating a composition that is more meaningful and more useful than its parts.As such its role and contribution to this process of urban transformation needs to be well understood,especially as it is constantly being revised and adjusted, overlapping with several disciplines and professions,all searching for clarity of scope and status.
