In the AW Interview, Venue B co-curator, Academic Director Li Xiangning explains that his curatorial vision for "urban borders" not only includes actual boundaries within the city, but also social boundaries created through cultural and life style differences. The goal of the case studies exhibited at Venue B is to promote further discussion about the relationship between "center" and "periphery" as physical and metaphorical ways of ordering cities, knowledge and relationships. For his own thinking, Li cites the influences of sociologist Richard Sennet and critical urbanist, Dana Cuff. Indeed, to situate this discussion in broader perspective, a multi-disciplinary group of participants has been invited to Venue B to develop a critical perspective on the conditions of urban boundaries. Li also hopes that this edition of the Biennale will highlight the historic specificity that informs and shapes contemporary Chinese architecture and urban planning, which in turn, would make salient the particular contributions that contemporary Chinese architects can make to the development of architecture as a global practice.
