Stephen Owen,the famous American sinologist,translates Chinese ancient literary thought and elaborates it cross-culturally in Readings in Chinese Literary Thought,which reflects general western scholars’ understanding about Chinese ancient literary thought. Taking his two paragraphs as examples which translate and explain The Great Preface to the Book of Songs,this essay discusses the function and classification of poetry from the perspective of comparative poetics. Through detailed comparison and contrast,the essay finds out the excellence and shortcomings of the English translation of Chinese literary theories,and forms deeper understanding about Chinese and western literary theories.
