For a long time,the reference issue is very significant in linguistics and linguistic philosophy. Fundamentally,the research on reference is mainly related to the relation between language and the world. Therefore,this paper briefly discusses the traditional reference of definite descriptions and analyzes anaphoric and cataphoric of definite descriptions. The research on this issue will help clearly classify definite descriptions,guarantee the lingual communication and provide a new perspective for the research on the reference of definite descriptions.
