Graham Greene, one of the most productive and widely-read British novelists of the 20th centu- ry, has created many short stories of artistic beauty. This paper attempts to explore how the fear of going insane is created and intensified through textual analysis, and goes on to interpret ＂craven＂ as a widespread social disease, for which the ego-humanism of the upper-class social elites should be held to blame.
