This paper differentiates the concepts of territory and territoriality.Territoriality is established through the multidimensional political,economic,and cultural practices based on the confirmation of territory border,which is a long-term process of the permeation of state power into the state territory.The territory of the United States expanded to the Rocky Mountains after the Louisiana Purchase,and Washington Irving participated in the territorialization of this new area by his western narratives.Irving's writings helped the U.S.government organize and reform the western contact zone that was different from the eastern area in terms of social space structures and features,transforming the heterogeneous West of civilization and savagery into homogenized territorial space dominated by the U.S.state power.
