Jishuitan Hospital is located in Xicheng District, Beijing, with its courtyard dating back to Qing Dynasty, being a palace garden of Prince Cheng. It preserved the natural landscape pattern of that time in good shape. However, the single function of leisure can no longer meet the specific requirements for environment of a hospital. This design aimed to combine traditional nature environment pattern with modern restoration function. Based on the preservation of the existing landscape and architecture heritages, the renewal design of the courtyard focused on exploring a way to take advantage of the landscape to create a fine space for orthopedic patients' restoration, so that it endowed the palace garden with a vigorous new life. The concept of design was derived from Zen Buddhism, whose highest level is "to sow the seeds of compassion in people's hearts, and it would finally turn out great achievements". It means complying with nature, in which human beings are in harmony with environment.
