Brief Analysis of Relationship Between Ancient Cities and Rivers — Taking Ancient City of Luoyang as an Example

河流对于一个城市选址和发展有着至关重要的地位,处理好河流与城市发展的关系,才能使这个城市接受历史的考验。洛阳作为中国古代最著名的大都市之一,它的兴衰与其洛阳盆地的河流网的关系有着密切的联系。东周时期洛阳城市的兴起,汉魏时期洛阳城市的发展,隋唐时期洛阳城市的繁荣,以及后代洛阳城市的衰败,都与河流水源有着密不可分的联系。

Rivers play a vital position for a city site selection and development. Only by handling well the relation- ship between the rivers and the city development, can a city endure the test of history. As one of the most famous ancient metropolitans in China, the rise and fall of Luoyang was closely linked with river network in its basin area. The rise of Luoyang in the Eatern Zhou Dynasty, the development of Luoyang in the Han and Wei Dynasties, the prosperity of Luoyang in the Sui and Tang Dynasties and the decline in the offspring of Luoyang were all inextricably linked with the river and water sources.
